The missiles are launched from ships and submarines via vertical launch systems (VLS) or torpedo tubes. Tomahawk missiles can only be operated within the framework of U.S. systems, as guidance, targeting, certified software, and technical maintenance are controlled by the United States. Countries such as the United Kingdom, Australia, the Netherlands, and Japan operate or plan to operate the Tomahawk, but always in close cooperation with U.S. defense authorities.
