This is a fascinating case because Donut Lab isn't actually a "new" company in the traditional sense - it is a spin-off from Verge Motorcycles (formerly RMK Vehicles), the Finnish company famous for building that "Tron-style" electric motorcycle with the hollow rear wheel. Here is the deeper story of who they are, how they stumbled onto this technology, and why their "10x" claims are turning heads right now (specifically around CES 2026).

Who are they? (The Origin Story) Donut Lab is essentially the engineering arm of Verge Motorcycles spun out into its own company.

The Problem: When Verge started building their electric superbike (the Verge TS), they wanted a rear wheel that was completely hollow (hubless). No one made a motor that could do that.
The Invention: They had to engineer a proprietary "Rim Motor" (an electric motor integrated into the rim of the wheel rather than the center hub).
The Pivot: While refining the bike, the founders (including Marko Lehtimäki and Ville Piippo) realized that the components they had built; the motor, the inverter, and the battery management system - were actually more valuable than the motorcycle itself. They realized traditional Tier 1 suppliers (like Bosch or Continental) moved too slowly for the next generation of EVs.
The Result: In 2024/2025, they split the tech into Donut Lab to sell this "skateboard platform" to other companies-makers of drones, hypercars, trucks, and defense vehicles.
The Tech: Why is it "10x Better"? The "10x" claim you are seeing likely refers specifically to the cycle life and safety of their new solid-state battery, coupled with the torque density of their motor.
The "Donut" Motor (The Rim Motor) Most electric motors are cylinders that spin a shaft. Donut’s motor is a ring.
How it works: Copper windings are inside the outer rim. The "tire" part spins around a static inner ring.
The Advantage: It eliminates the transmission. A normal EV motor spins at 10,000+ RPM and needs a gearbox to lower that speed to the wheels. The Donut motor spins at the exact speed of the wheel.
Why it feels 10x: It generates massive torque (turning force) instantly. In the Verge bike, this motor puts out 1,000+ Nm of torque directly to the asphalt. That is supercar-level force in a motorcycle.
The Solid-State Battery (The New Breakthrough) This is the big news from January 2026. While everyone (Toyota, VW, QuantumScape) has been promising solid-state batteries "in 5 years," Donut Lab claims theirs is production-ready now.
The "10x" Metric: Standard Lithium-Ion batteries last about 1,500 - 3,000 charge cycles before degrading. Donut Lab claims their solid-state cells last 100,000 cycles. If true, the battery essentially becomes an "infinite" component that outlasts the vehicle itself.
Performance:
Charge time: 0 - 100% in 5 minutes (standard EVs take 20-40 mins to get to 80%).
Safety: It has no liquid electrolyte (the stuff that catches fire in Teslas). You can supposedly pierce it with a nail or shoot it, and it won't explode.
Temperature: Works perfectly at -30°C (where normal batteries die) and +100°C.
Skepticism & Reality Check You should always be cautious with "battery breakthrough" claims. The graveyard of startups claiming revolutionary batteries is vast. However, Donut Lab is different for one reason: They have a host vehicle. Most battery startups are just labs sending press releases. Donut Lab is putting these batteries into the Verge TS Pro motorcycle, which is shipping to customers in Q1 2026. This means their "lab experiment" has to survive rain, vibration, and road abuse immediately. Summary: How did they get there? They got there by reverse engineering the supply chain. Instead of being a battery company trying to find a car to put it in, they were a motorcycle company that got annoyed that existing batteries and motors weren't good enough for their design, so they built their own. The "Killer App": Watch for their partnership with drone companies and defense contractors (like ESOX Group). A battery that doesn't catch fire when shot and lasts 100,000 cycles is far more valuable to the military than it is to your average commuter.
